Snow Ball King

head shot 1

Turning the hands of time back to the 1950s when I was a student at Webster School, (1st-6th grade), we always looked forward to the first snow of the year.

At that time in history everyone walked to and from school and it did not matter if it rained or snowed, and yes it was up hill both ways for miles, ( I just had to put that in there! ). We walked through snow up to our knees and they did not cancel school. LOL

In our neighborhood winter was a very dangerous time of the year and you had to always be on the lookout for the dreaded “Fritz” snow or slush ball. When my good friend Butch Fritz, hit you with one of his and you were not dressed heavy enough they would haul you off to home or the hospital.

I should also mention, Butch took this to extremes, he even filled his freezer with snowballs and kept them until summertime, if he hit you with one then you were in a world of hurt.

I could tell you the story about Butch & I and the Great Marble Game at Webster School and its repercussions, but I will save it for another day!

For all of the people that did not grow up in our neighborhood you may know Butch as John Fritz, the developer of Sunset Ice Cream, and now as they say, you know the rest of the story.
